How much does it cost to make a German Chocolate cake?

Q : How much does it cost to make a lemon cake?
Apple Pie? Pecan Pie?
A : Depends on whether or not you want to make it from scratch or use a mix. Doing it from scratch can cost more up front if you don't already have a lot of the basic things in your house like cake flour, coconut, etc. However, once you buy cake flour it can be used for other dishes so it can offset the intial expenditures. Like you may already have flour, butter, eggs so an apple pie might only cost the amount it would take to buy the apples (unless you want to use the canned variety). And the pecan pie it might only be the cost of the pecan's and caro syrup.

Why is my german chocolate frosting so thin?

Q : I'm following the recipe on the inside flap of the Bakers german chocolate. However, when I make the icing, it's so thin. Even when I add extra coconut, it still slides all over my cake. What am I doing wrong?
A : try putting it in the refigerator for ten to twenty minutes then whip it using medium speed until desired consistency. if that doesn't work check the expiration dates of your ingredients.

How to make a German Chocolate Cake look good?

Q : Because whenever I make it, it looks really lumpy and ugly. How to make it prettier?
A : German Chocolate cake is a lumpy, ugly cake :) however, I make mine pretty by doingthe following:
Bake my cake in 2 9" pans, let them cool, then freeze them over night tightly wrapped in plastic wrap
The next day, I put one frozen round on my serving platter, and pipe a border of chocolate icing around the outside edge of the cake- this creates a dam to hold all the gooey goodness in. Then I fill the cake with half of my coconut pecan frosting and top it with the second frozen layer.
I cover the sides in chocolate frosting, smoothing as best I can.
Then I pipe huge stars all around the top of the cake- it creates a dam and looks pretty! Then I fill the dam with my remaining coconut pecan icing, and pipe another big star right in the center of the cake. It turns out beautiful every time.

Can I substitute unsweetened chocolate for sweet german chocolate in a cake?

Q : I don't have time to go to the store. Can I just substitute unsweetened chocolate for sweet german chocolate in a cake? Should I reduce the amount of chocolate I use?
A : 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder plus 1/3 cup sugar and 3 tablespoons fat can be substituted for 4 ounces German's sweet baking chocolate.

You have to replace the sugar and fat of the sweet baking chocolate. If you use unsweetened chocolate, just add the sugar.

1 oz of unsweetened chocolate plus 1 tablespoon of sugar.
